If your drain location is higher than the ice maker’s water outlet (for example, draining into a nearby sink’s plumbing), you absolutely need a drain pump. Gravity alone cannot move water uphill. If you have a floor drain directly beneath or slightly lower than the unit, gravity draining works fine.
